Papyrus and the sociology of typography

Designed by Chris Costello back in 1983, Papyrus (and not Comic Sans) is my least favorite font. The disdain is rooted neither in its subtle serifs nor its curious kerning, nor any particular aspect of the typeface itself, but rather how it is used—and what the usage says about us as a culture.

The curious meme of “San Francisco Values”

The cover of Friday’s Chronicle reported a flurry of comments from GOP leadership (among which I’m including O’Reilly) on “San Francisco Values”. These three words are intended to scare voters into voting Republican, keeping SF Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi out of the Speaker position.

Setting sail for the Pirate Bay

It’s been 43 days since I’ve talked about pirates, which is far too long. I’m certainly not the first to note the hilarious audacity of The Pirate Bay, as their responses to legal threats are certifiable entertainment, but reading the reactions on Digg (whose “news” is fast resembling email forwards of the late 90s) I decided in was time for a lesson in ethical development.
